A Huntingdonshire artist has made a collection of 10 scupltures out of recycled cans depicting The Queen’s beasts.
On a visit to Kew Gardens last July, Tom Hiscocks saw the representations of The Queen’s beasts, which were outside Westminster Abbey for Queen Elizabeth’s coronation ceremony, but thought they needed updating.
Mr Hiscocks, of Causeway, Great Staughton, took around 2,000 hours and 3,000 cans and other recycled materials to recreate the heraldic beasts.
He told The Hunts Post: “I just thought they looked solemn and rigid and felt they wanted to be expressed in another, more contemporary way. I also believe they express my essence, as in my previous jobs I have always been told what to do and was not able to express myself.
“I want the sculptures to be free, accessible and visible for people to be inspired by them.”
The heraldic beasts are currently on show in Gabriel’s Wharf, on London’s South Bank, and are due to appear at the East of England Show in Peterborough in July.
