Officers investigating the murder of Sam Mechelewski in Huntingdon have made another arrest.
This morning (Thursday) a woman in her 30s from Huntingdon was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and possession of a Class B drug. She remains in custody at Thorpe Wood Police Station, in Peterborough.
Sam, 20, from Huntingdon, was found dead in a wooded area of Hinchingbrooke Park by a member of the public on February 1, sparking a major police investigation.
Senior coroner David Heming opened an inquest into Sam’s death last month and then adjourned the hearing pending the outcome of further inquiries.
He said Sam had suffered a stab wound.
Mr Heming said a paramedic confirmed death at 2.07pm and that Sam had been identified through fingerprint analysis.
“The result of the post mortem examination, pending further tests, is that the cause of death was a stab wound to the neck,” he told the hearing.
Mr Heming adjourned the inquest until July 20, but added: “If in the meantime I am requested to suspend this investigation by Cambridgeshire Constabulary I will take that course of action.
“I would like to express my condolences to the family of the deceased.”
Cambridgeshire police are continuing to appeal for anyone with information about Sam’s death to come forward.
They have also distributed posters in Huntingdon appealing for witnesses and have released CCTV images of Sam at Sainsbury’s the night before his body was discovered, as well as a picture of a black Audi car.
Officers carried out door to door inquiries near the park where’s Sam’s body was found and a diving team searched for a knife in a nearby pond.
They are particularly keen to hear from anyone who saw Sam on the night of January 31 or the car.
Sam, who moved to Huntingdon as a teenager, was a student at Hinchingbrooke School and also studied at Huntingdonshire Regional College.
His mother Grace Groom also made an emotional appeal for anyone with information about her son’s death to contact the police.
She described Sam as a “very gentle” boy and said their lives would never be the same.
She said: “If you have any information please contact the police. If you need to give it anonymously phone the Crimestoppers number.
“Please come forward. Please give us the answers that we need. Please help us find the people who did this.”
