On-street parking charges in Huntingdon look set to be increased.

Cambridgeshire County Council has reviewed its charges in Huntingdon – at the northern end of the High Street – and Cambridge. Charges could go up in Huntingdon and be reduced in Cambridge.

A report to cabinet on Tuesday (March 4) will state that charges in Huntingdon have not been increased since 1998. The charge is currently 30p an hour with CCC proposing it’s increased to 80p hour, but motorists would be able to pay for 15 minute slots, each costing 20p.

Cambridge charges in some streets could be reduced by 20 per cent – from £3 an hour to £2.40 – although fees could be introduced on Sundays.

CCC’s deputy leader Councillor Mac McGuire said: “The review that has recently been undertaken considered responses from an informal consultation and current usage data as well as the needs of each locality and the facilities available in that area. In some cases, the proposed changes to parking charges will see a reduction in costs and in other areas we are planning to extend the maximum usage time, which is designed to be benefit local businesses, shoppers and visitors.

“But at a time when the council has to meet savings of £38 million this coming financial year we must make sure our charges are fair and in line with today’s costs. While we would like to keep charges frozen at 1998 prices or even free, the cost to the Council and our tax payers has risen in that time. Free parking on Sundays means drivers are tempted not to move their cars and therefore less people have a chance to park and visit local shops and attractions.”
