THE fire at Huntingdon Recycling Centre is still burning, with firefighters battling an overnight flare-up caused by the wind.

A turntable ladder was called to the site, near the A14 at Ellington, at 3.35am this morning (Monday) after the wind spread the fire to a tree, which was quickly extinguished.

Two fire crews and a water foam unit remain in attendance, and resumed firefighting activity at dawn this morning.

The blaze was reported at 3am on Saturday morning, when approximately 1,000 tonnes of composted material caught fire.

At its peak, 60 firefighters from 14 crews were in attendance, with support from the United States Air Force, which assisted with water supplies. Crews from Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire also assisted.

High winds caused the fire to spread, resulting in the closure of the A14 westbound carriageway.

The fire service also warned that the fire was causing a plume of smoke, which was being carried by strong winds, towards Huntingdon. Residents affected by the smoke were advised to stay indoors and keep doors and windows closed.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established.
