Huntingdon served up a treat for Shrove Tuesday, as the annual Pancake Flipathon got under way on February 9.

Organised by Huntingdon Town Council, the day saw community groups, schools and even the local mayors walk round the Market Square flipping pancakes as they went.

Councillor Ian Jackson, mayor for St Ives Town Council, took first place for his impressive flipping style, shortly followed by Councillor Peter Morgan, deputy mayor for Godmanchester Town Council.

After dropping his pancake several times though, Councillor Daryl Brown, deputy mayor for Huntington Town Council, took home third place.

He said: “I was told we were all winners for taking part, but it was good. Lots of practise went into it, and I think I was going for more heightened flips rather than speed.”

Other groups taking part included Hartford Junior School, Leonard Cheshire Disability and Stukeley Meadows School, with participants collecting chocolate as they finished.

Teams from Tesco, BID Huntingdon and Luminus also featured in a relay race, before a group of guide dogs and their owners closed the event.

Although he could not take part, Bill Hensley, mayor of Huntingdon, was watching from the sidelines.

He said: “I think every community group is represented here today and it’s a lovely family event. It’s good to see everybody here.”
