Hywel Barrett, his partner Amelia Sewell and friend Lee Chapman are cycling 100 miles as part of Prudential Ride London in aid of The Institute of Cancer Research. The 27-year-old reporter set himself the challenge, which follows the Olympic road race route, after organising the Two Wheels for Woodlands charity bike ride last year. Mr Barretts partner was also inspired to take part in memory of her grandfather Basil, who died in 2007, and her other grandfather Malcolm, who had stomach cancer. Last year was the 10th anniversary of losing my mum to cancer, so I came up with Two Wheels to raise money for the Woodlands Cancer Centre expansion project to help more cancer patients to commemorate the milestone, the reporter said. I hope to get the event back up and running again this year but found it difficult to enjoy the cycling on the day as I was worried about all the other cyclists on the roads and hoping they enjoyed themselves. Last year I managed to get up to cycling 70 miles, but this time I need to go an extra 30 as part of this next challenge. I dont like cycling hills very much as most of my life I have lived in Cambridgeshire, so Box Hill will certainly push me to my limit. He added: Two of my aunts have also had cancer so I know how the disease affects patients as well as their families. In my job I have also come across some inspiring people who have benefitted from and lived longer due to cancer drugs developed by charities like The Institute of Cancer Research, which is why the charity is close to me. On Saturday, Mr Barrett and Miss Sewell held a bake sale at the St Ives One Leisure Outdoor Centre and raised £167.44 to kick start their fundraising. Mr Barrett said: Id like to thank all the members of St Ives Hockey Club who bought a cake or two to support us, as well as the Outdoor Centre staff for putting up with us all day.
