The new mayor of Huntingdon has said that the town’s “tired” bus station could do with a revamp, as the district council announced it would be looking at options to improve the facility in the near future.

Councillor Sarah Gifford, who took up the role as mayor earlier this month, has said the bus station would enhance the town if it was to be refurbished, with Huntingdonshire District Council, which owns the site, saying it would be considering its options soon.

Cllr Gifford said: “I think that it would be a good idea to have a revamp. It is a shame that the bus station is looking tired, but it does all come down to funding.

“Naturally, any revamp would enhance the town and would make it more inviting, but it is always a question of funding and how much money should be spent.

“I know a lot of people are complaining about rough sleepers there, and I understand their frustration, but it is sad that some people are having to sleep rough. If they didn’t sleep there it is a question of where they can go, and I think that is something we need to look at.”

Huntingdon residents took to social media to voice their concerns, with many raising the amount of graffiti and rubbish at the station as an issue.

Jackie Sutton said: “[It needs] nicer toilets and nicer seating, a non-smoking seating area outside, as I use the buses and there’s not a smoke-free zone apart from inside.”

Anne Aldred, also commented, saying : “It’s shabby and dirty. The information about timetables is not clear and hard to read. It doesn’t feel safe there.”

And Gary Britton said: “[The station] is well overdue a revamp. The place is an eyesore and the toilets are probably the worst in Cambridgeshire.”

A spokesman for Huntingdonshire District Council said “Huntingdonshire District Council is responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of Huntingdon bus station and this is carried out seven days a week. We are always looking to improve the services that we provide and options for the improvement of this site will be considered in the very near future.”
