Hundreds turn out to enjoy street party in Ramsey

The main street through the town, Great Whyte, was closed to traffic during the day to allow as many people as possible to attend. Guests brought along food to share and around 500 people of all ages joined in the family fun and games.

Once the party was officially opened by town mayor, Adela Costello, there were arts and crafts in the library and great fun was had on both a Rodeo Bull and the miniature train running down the road by Fenland Light Railway.

To enable everyone to attend the community bus picked up people in the villages. Young talent Maddison Pauley sang two sets and led the singing on the national anthem at the cake cutting. The cake was baked and decorated by Michelle George and pieces were given to all the children. Ramsey Youth Workers organised traditional races and the event was masterfully compared by Richard Hyde resplendent in his bowler hat and Union flag waistcoat.

Many other groups, organisations, businesses and individuals helped to make the event a great success. Thanks to the generosity of people at the party Ramsey Community Bus, Ramsey and District Day Centre and the Ram Jam Children’s Book Festival in Ramsey were donated £60 each from the raffle that was held on the day.

Anna Bradley-Dorman, a member of the organising group, said: “It’s great when everyone works together. Many groups and individual helped to make the day a success from the army cadets putting out the tables and chairs, loaned from Ramsey 1940s, to the kind donations from local businesses.

“Lots of individuals gave their time freely and local people brought along food to share. It was a real community event with all ages in attendance. We put our faith in the people of Ramsey and as always they did not disappoint.”
