Ramsey fire station played host to more than 200 primary school children this week as part of an initiative to teach youngsters how to stay safe.
Six local primaries visited the station for the Schools Safety Zone Challenge, from October 11 to October 13, where representatives from various organisations set up different learning zones where pupils were taught about water safety, smoke alarms and evacuation, road safety, cyber bullying, first aid, animal husbandry, and level crossing safety.
Delivering the safety messages to the Year Five pupils, aged nine to 10, were representatives from Cambridgeshire Constabulary, Road Safety, Trading Standards, Network Rail, British Transport Police, Wood Green Animals Shelter and Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service.
One of the exercises involved filling a room with cosmetic smoke and teaching pupils how to evacuate safely, including calling someone who had been set up as a 999 operator in the room next door.
The event was organised by community safety officer for Huntingdonshire, Jill Gibbs, from Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service, and PCSOs Vicki Docking and Jill Tiernan from Cambridgeshire Constabulary.
Station Commander Dave Lynch, said: “We were delighted to host the event again and hope children had fun and will now stay safer because of it.”
Organisers thanked Tesco for providing refreshments for the week.
