After pressure from parents, students and The Hunts Post, Hinchingbrooke School has retained its bottle green within the new uniform.

The Huntingdon school outraged parents at the end of the spring term as a letter was sent home about a new uniform which abandoned the green jumpers in favour of a black blazer and grey jumper with grey trousers for boys, and a grey tartan skirt for girls.

A Facebook page entitled Keep Hinchingbrooke School Green formed as a campaign group against ditching the green, attracted more than 1,000 ‘likes’.

On Thursday, Hinchingbrooke updated its new uniform page to include an optional green jumper as part of schoolwear that will be phased in from September.

Girls will also be able to wear grey trousers after some complained about the practicality of skirts.

Another letter was sent last week which said: “Following further discussions, and in deference to the parents who feel particularly attached to the bottle green colour and its association with Hinchingbrooke, we will be offering two versions of the jumper on the [supplier] Price & Buckland website.

“Parents may choose to buy either the grey jumper with a green stripe or a green jumper with a grey stripe, which will further emphasise the green.”

Tracey Pell, whose daughters attend the school, said: “I personally am quite happy with that but I know some do not want the change at all. The kids certainly don’t and some are still very concerned about the cost, but the headteacher has said we have until Easter next year to buy, so it’s a good compromise I suppose.”

Students in Year 7, 9 and 10 in September will wear the uniform from the start of the school year, with those in Year 8 given further grace to wear the current green jumper until the summer term next year. Year 11 pupils will not be required to change their uniform.

The new uniform will cost between £69 and £84 from Price & Buckland, with a cheaper alternative from Tesco.
