The eye clinic at Hinchingbrooke Hospital has been nominated for a national award.

Its macular service has been shortlisted in the ‘Clinical service of the year’ category of the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence.

The award recognises exceptionally good practice caring for people with age-related macular degeneration, the most common cause of sight loss in the UK.

Marianne Shiew, consultant ophthalmologist, said: “The macular service at Hinchingbrooke Hospital was set up and led by my colleague Miss Toks Akerele and has grown from humble beginnings with only one doctor and a small team of nurses to a full blown multidisciplinary team of consultant ophthalmologists, specialist optometrists, nurse practitioners and a dedicated administrative coordinator.”

The overall winners will be presented with their awards at the society’s annual London conference on September 27.
