A petition with more than 6,000 signatures calling for services at Hinchingbrooke Hospital to be saved has been presented to the government.

Jonathan Djanogly, MP for Huntingdon, and St Ives councillor Ryan Fuller presented a petition of 6,309 Huntingdonshire residents to 10 Downing Street last Wednesday (June 15).

The petition calls for the protection of services at Huntingdon’s Hinchingbrooke Hospital in light of a proposed merger with Peterborough Hospitals.

In May, Mr Djanogly jointly organised a march in protest at the proposal with the Hands off Hinchingbrooke pressure group.

Mr Djanogly said: “A merger between the two hospitals is being progressed following agreement from both trust boards. We must now do everything we can to ensure that services are protected and strengthened at Hinchingbrooke Hospital.

“In presenting the petition to 10 Downing Street I have made the case for our hospital at the very highest levels of government. I would urge local residents to continue signing my petition as a copy will also sent to the Secretary of State for Health later this month.”

In meetings held last month, both hospital trust agreed to progress to a full business case for the proposed merger. The trusts will report back with the findings of the business case later in the year, before a decision is made as to whether the merger should go ahead.
