The 2017 ‘hospital heroes’ chosen by patients at Hinchingbrooke Hospital were announced at an awards ceremony held on October 20.
Staff from Hinchingbrooke Hospital joined their colleagues from Peterborough City and Stamford hospitals to celebrate their first Outstanding Achievement Awards of the newly-formed North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust.
Midwife Vicky Bennett was named Hinchingbrooke Hospital Hero 2017 for the care she gave to a couple who lost their baby son at 37 weeks.
The couple nominated Vicky for the way she supported them both through the birth and the days afterwards, saying that she helped them savour memories despite being distraught.
Consultant paediatrician Dr Nik Johnson was highly commended for the care he gave to two children from the same family for a number of years. The parent who nominated him said he has left no stone unturned in the care he had given to the family.
Vicky and Nik were not the only Hinchingbrooke Hospital staff members to walk away with awards at the event, which was attended by 120 staff members from across the three hospitals.
Jamie Mirams, senior house officer, was highly commended in the Outstanding Individual of the Year award for the positive way he works with colleagues and patients in the emergency department and acute assessment unit.
Anne Barry, surgical care practitioner in the urogynaecology department, was highly commended in the Putting Patients First award for the way she consistently encourages and supports her colleagues to develop their patient care skills.
Marielba Pilsbury, infant feeding specialist maternity care assistant, won the Working Together award for the way she supports patients and colleagues and still finds time to complete a degree course alongside full time work.
Rob Hughes, chairman of North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Our staff give us reasons to be proud every day and this event helped showcase that fact. It was fantastic to be able to bring all our staff together to say thank you for the great things they do for our patients.
“I was particularly pleased to honour our Hinchingbrooke Hospital Heroes. We received lots of nominations for Hinchingbrooke staff and showcased them all on the night.
“Thank you to everyone who took the time to nominate. Some of the stories of the level of care given completely blew our judging panel away. I’d particularly like to congratulate Vicky and Nik for their awards, which were richly deserved.”
