A BUS driver who caused chaos on the guided busway when he drove through a red light and crashed into the guide rail has admitted driving without due care and attention.

Phillip Logan, of Churchgate, Soham, was driving the single-decker bus at 3pm on November 20 when it reached the junction at Station Road, Longstanton.

Passengers were thrown from their seats when the bus hit the side of the track but no one was injured. Firefighters attended as there were fears the bus would overturn.

Logan was interviewed by Stagecoach bosses after the firm completed its investigation into the crash as part of disciplinary procedures. Logan has since left the firm.

Angela Mackenzie was travelling to her home in St Ives after visiting a garden centre in Trumpington, Cambridge.

The 67-year-old said: “I was totally in shock. There was a violent bump which made me think we must have got caught in the car trap.

“I was on the floor and the poor ladies in front of me fell onto the floor. I was hanging on to a bar to stop myself moving.

“I only suffered bruising but was shaken up afterwards. It was horrifying.”

Andy Campbell, managing director of Stagecoach Cambridge, told The Hunts Post: “What [Logan] did is unforgivable and you would expect all drivers to drive with due care and attention whether they are on the guided busway or on a public highway.”

Magistrates on Friday (March 8) fined the 56-year-old bus driver £500 and ordered him to pay £70 costs and a £70 victim surcharge.
