A Guide leader from St Neots has just returned from a trip of a lifetime to Cambodia.
Katie Hurrel, 26, a leader with 1st Deeping St James Guides and Deeping Senior Section, spent six months fundraising for her trip by hosting a quiz night at her local guide’s group, as well as securing donations from friends and local residents.
While on the trip, she was given the chance to visit the ancient city of Angkor Wat, explore the many temples of Siem Reap and meet Cambodian Girl Scouts.
She also got the chance to learn about the history of Cambodia, and discover the country’s cuisine – which included eating a tarantula.
Katie’s trip was part of Girlguiding Anglia’s international opportunities programme, which offers international adventures to around 50 young women aged 14 to 25 each year.
“This was my first time leading an international trip with Girlguiding,” said Katie. “It was so rewarding to see all of the girls interacting with each other, getting on with the work, really making a difference and enjoying themselves.
“We wanted to make sure the girls had as full an experience as possible. The whole trip was amazing!”
