The RSPB’s Fen Drayton Lakes has received a grant of £31,000 to put towards a new visitor hub.
The reserve, a patchwork of lakes and riverside meadows, is home to a wide variety of wildfowl and raptors as well as a thriving population of small mammals and insects.
The conservation charity applied to the Mick George Community Fund for help improving the visitor centre and public viewpoints at Fen Drayton and was successful with its bid.
The development started this month, with earthwork preparations and scrub felling under way before progress can be made on the respective island re-profiling, island creation, interpretation and signage around the site.
Chris Hudson, senior site manager at RSPB said: “Fen Drayton Lakes is home to many species that have suffered from population decline both locally and nationally, this project will help to manage the site for their benefit, aiding the recovery in the area, whilst helping plants and insects find more places to live and grow. We are grateful for the support from Mick George to allow us to fulfil this project.”
