Cambridgeshire County Council has revealed that it will be providing £6millon of investment for the construction of a new academy school planned for Godmanchester.

The school, which will be known as Godmanchester Bridge Academy, is set to provide around 420 more school places in Huntingdonshire

Run by the Godmanchester Community Education Trust (GCET), it will offer places for all primary ages, from reception up to Year 6, when the building is set to be finished in September 2017.

In a letter sent to chairman of the community trust, Phillip Mackay, the mayor of Godmanchester, Councillor David Underwood said: “It is of vital importance that there should be high quality primary provision in the town which will accommodate all children who require a place without the need to travel beyond Godmanchester.”

In addition, the academy will have a separate 52 place pre-school nursery that will be built next to the main school building.

The site that has been earmarked for the new school is on the Bearscroft development, to the east of Godmanchester.

It had been planned to open the school in September 2016 but pupils will spend their first year sharing premises with Godmanchester Community Primary School, before moving to permanent accommodation the following September.

From September 2016, the school will provide 20 reception places, and 10 places in Years 1 to 5.

Godmanchester Community Education Trust was chosen by Cambridgeshire County Council to run the news school in September 2014, after it was selected ahead of the Diocese of Ely Multi-Academy Trust.
