YOUNGSTERS will have a chance to pitch their skills against a footballing legend on Saturday (March 12) when they go head to head with England goalkeeper Ian Walker.

The former Tottenham player who has been capped for England four times will be taking on Godmanchester Rovers and Stukeley Meadows under 10s in a penalty competition to raise funds for people suffering with life-threatening illnesses and their families.

Walker decided to lend his support to the event after responding to an appeal from Godmanchester Rovers under 10s coach Colin Burroughes on social networking Twitter.

Mr Burroughes said: “I put something on my Twitter site saying we were looking for a goalkeeper. I am followed by the former producer of Soccer AM who re-tweeted it and then one of the guys who has got his own show on Sky did the same, so the message got sent out to 20,000 people.

“On the back of that Ian Walker he sent me a message on Twister, saying he would be around then and could help.”

The team last year raised 500 for Macmillan Cancer Care and this year hope to raise hundreds more for the Willow Foundation.

The charity set up by former Arsenal and Scotland goalkeeper Bob Wilson in memory of his daughter Anna provides support for people with life-threatening illnesses and their families.

Anna, who was nicknamed Willow, died of cancer aged 31. During her five year battle with the disease, she and her family spent some of their most memorable times together on excursions and trips away.

The foundation was set up by Bob and his wife Megs in order to give people aged 16 to 40 with life-threatening illnesses and their families the chance of sharing some special days out together as well.

Mr Burroughes said: “The charity is based in Hertfordshire, but it would like to become more widely known in Cambridgeshire.”

Thanks to sponsors Commark Ltd, Godmanchester Rovers are sporting the Willow Foundation logo on their new home kit.

INFORMATION: Spectators are welcome to view the event at Godmanchester Rovers home ground at Hinchingbrooke School from 11am. Donations will be appreciated.
