Gill Baker and Irene Prior have been strutting their stuff on in halls throughout Huntingdonshire for 17 and 12 years, respectively, and are now part of the BootScooterz Line Dancers that meet every week to learn new steps and keep themselves active. The pair both started dancing after their husbands died as a way to make new make new friends and keep themselves fit. Ninety-one-year-old Irene, from Hartford plucked up the courage to take to the floor after receiving a free membership from the former LA Fitness gym in Towerfields. I was sat in my car thinking what am I doing because I had never been into fitness but I had always been into dancing, said Irene. I decided to go in and the teacher that day was teaching line dancing. I didnt know anything about it but I knew I could keep in time with the music. Since that first class, former dance teacher Irene hasnt looked back she now does two line dancing classes a week and has credited them to keeping her young. I think this is what has kept me going, as you have to learn a lot of steps so you have to remember them. Also it has helped me make a lot of friends all the people at the classes are lovely. At 91 Irene, from Hartford, also takes part in tai chi, body conditioning and aerobics classes throughout the week. Another of those still keeping active is soon to be 90-year-old Gill Baker from Wyton who will not give up line dancing until her body tells her to stop. She said: The main reason I go is for exercise but it also helps with concentration and memory as you have to concentrate on the new steps you are being taught and then remember them the next week I think it definitely keeps me young. Line dancing doesnt just keep Gill youthful it has also helped her widen her friendship circle and meet interesting people. Its a great thing to do as it isnt to difficult, it is relaxed and I can fit it into my social life and the people that go are good fun it has helped me make some new friends. Gill counts herself lucky that she is still able to go to classes every week and strut her stuff even though she is one of the oldest in the sessions.
