There was no sign of a political upset in North West Cambridgeshire as Shailesh Vara held onto his North West Cambridgeshire seat, albeit with a slightly decreased majority.

Mr Vara polled 37,529 votes to win re-election, with Labour’s Iain Ramsbottom coming in second with 19,521.

Mr Vara’s majority stands at 18,008 – down slightly from 2015, when he had a 19,795-vote majority.

The biggest loser on the night was UKIP, as its candidate – John Whitby – polled just 2,518 votes, a fall in share of 16.2 per cent since 2015.

UKIP was beaten into fourth place by the Liberal Democrats, whose candidate, Bridget Smith, polled 3,168 votes, exactly five per cent of the vote.

The Green Party’s Greg Guthrie picked up 1,255 votes.

Voter turnout was 69 per cent.

Mr Vara said: “The campaign – with the benefit of hindsight – could have been run a bit better and, absolutely, Jeremy Corbyn made a lot of promises which were attractive but in reality his figures simply don’t add up. They were based on a magic tree of money.

“From a Conservative point of view, I think it is important that we have stability now because in 10 days’ time, we have the start of negotiations with the EU and it is a time that we need to stick together. If we get it right all of us can benefit.

“On a personal note, I am delighted that the people of North West Cambridgeshire have placed their confidence and trust in me for a fourth time. It is an immense privilege and honour and I take my responsibilities very seriously.”
