A MAN who ‘brutally’ attacked a Good Samaritan when he tried to stop a gang from damaging a car in Ramsey has been jailed.

Adam O’Neil, of Great Whyte, Ramsey, was part of a group who turned on a 20-year-old man after he approached the to stop damaging a car on Station Road shortly after midnight on July 9, last year.

The 20-year-old was punched repeatedly until he fell to the ground where he was kicked in the head. He was able to escape momentarily before being attacked by the same gang further down the road.

O’Neil, 22, pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm and an unrelated charge of criminal damage to his ex-girlfriend’s car.

He was jailed for 14 months at Peterborough Crown Court on Monday (January 23) for the assualt and a further six months for criminal damage to run consecutively. O’Neil was also given a 10-year restraining order to his ex-girlfriend.

Detective Constable Sarah Fines said: “This was a brutal attack on a man who was simply acting in a public-spirited way. He approached a gang who were brazenly jumping up and down on a car, asking them to stop.

“For his troubles he was set upon and suffered a number of head injuries. We will not tolerate such violence and those inflicting it will face a prison sentence.”
