THOUSANDS of people descended to the IWM Duxford at the weekend to witness iconic aircraft take to the sky.

Planes spanning most of the history of flight wowed the crowd at the Flying Legends show with 24,000 people estimated to have passed through the gates on Saturday and Sunday.

One of the highlights was the air show debut of the P-47G Thunderbolt. One of the types of plane flown by the US Air Force from Duxford during WWII and restored in a six year project.

Three Mark 1 Spitfires opened the show and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, which includes a Lancaster and a Hurricane took to the skies.

A museum spokesman said: “It was absolutely brilliant, it was a wonderful feast of nostalgia as always.

“There was a lot on the ground and everyone had a wonderful time.”

As well as the aerial displays living history groups set up on the ground and guests could soak up the atmosphere at a special bar.
