A local fundraiser recently visited the Woodlands Centre at Hinchingbrooke Hospital to donate funds raised at a charity event in September.

Jeremy Hall and a team of volunteers organised a football match between local team Houghton and Wyton FC veterans and Tottenham Hotspur Legends, which raised thousands of pounds to help treat cancer patients.

Jeremy’s mum, Jackie was treated for breast cancer at the Woodlands Centre, and in the following years donated regularly to the centre as it was her favourite charity. Unfortunately Jackie passed away, and in her honour Jeremy pledged to continue his mum’s legacy.

The match came about when Paul Miles, who works for Tottenham FC, put the group in touch with the Tottenham Hotspurs Legends and they agreed to take part in the fundraising match. The event continued into the evening with an auction, a live band, hog roast, raffle and the opportunity to have a photograph with the real FA Cup.

Jeremy said: “This event would not have been possible without the help and support of the organising team, along with the generosity of the local community. We were very lucky to receive auction prizes from many local and national organisations, too many to name, and I would like to thank everyone who donated a prize, helped with the organisation of the event, and those who came along and made it so successful”.

With support from the event’s committee a total of £14,900 was raised to help treat cancer patients and this was split equally between the Woodlands Centre and Macmillan Cancer Support. Lynda Hall, Lead Cancer Nurse accepted the donation on behalf of the Woodlands Centre and Michelle Hutchinson accepted on behalf of Macmillan.

Lynda said: “We have been blown away by the dedication that has been shown in the organisation of this event, this is clearly a cause that is very close to the hearts of the organisers. I would like to sincerely thank Jeremy and his team, the donation of £7,450 will enable us to purchase a scalp cooling machine which can help patients receiving certain types of chemotherapy to keep their hair during and after treatment”.
