A memorial football match and family fun day for a teenager killed by a hit and run driver, is taking place next month.

Tom Jones died, aged 17, in 2005 when he was hit by a car and knocked into the Forty Foot Drain as he walked home from a party with friends.

The teenager, from Great Whyte, Ramsey, was the Ramsey Colts U17 captain, a member of the band Inkus and a pupil at Ramsey Abbey school.

As a tribute to him, a memorial stone and bench were placed at the Ramsey Colts football ground, but now the stone needs to be moved due to the club re-locating, and the event will raise the funds needed to do this.

One of the organisers, Stephen Ankers, who was a friend of Tom, is hoping for a good turn-out.

He said: “Tom’s death had a huge impact on us all. When it first happened I failed all my exams at school and I drifted for a few years. It makes you realise how short life is when something like that happens.”

Mr Ankers, who now lives in London working as an actor and a model, wants everyone to know that even though life goes on, Tom will never be forgotten.

He added: “All of us who where there the night Tom was killed will be playing in the match. We played a memorial match shortly after he died but haven’t set foot on the field since then. I want to raise money for the club, but also spread the word that even though life goes on from something so horrible, it doesn’t mean we forget.”

Tom had been walking back from a party in Ramsey St Mary’s on the B1040 when he was struck by the taxi just after midnight.

His body was discovered in the Forty Foot Drain the following day.

The driver of the car did not stop but a 49-year-old man, from Warboys, later admitted responsibility.

INFORMATION: There will be activities and refreshments at the club in Mill Lane, Ramsey, from 12noon, on Sunday, July 5, including zorbing, a bouncy castle, football skills sessions and more, with the big match kick-off at 3pm.

Everyone is welcome to attend and help raise the much needed funds to move Tom’s memorial to the club’s new field.
