Volunteers have said they were “overwhelmed” by the generosity of shoppers at the first collection for St Neots foodbank last Saturday (September 14).

At the collection, which took place at the town’s Waitrose, shoppers bought and donated 809.4kg of food which was then taken back to the foodbank’s store in Little End Road. This will help to form packages which will be distributed to people in the town in crisis from October 1.

Christine Green, trustee for the foodbank, said: “We were overwhelmed and Waitrose were having to continuously fill up the shelves. A lot of people seemed very aware of what we were doing and wanted to contribute which is down to the great support we’ve had in the local press and from local businesses.”

The foodbank is currently awaiting its charity status and recently received a grant of £2,600 from St Neots Town Council for start-up costs.
