Six fire engines from Sawtry, Huntingdon, St Neots, Papworth, Yaxley and Stanground, along with a command unit, were called shortly before 10pm last night (Sunday) to a barn in St Judiths Lane. As crews arrived around 500 tonnes of straw were well alight in the barn, which measured about 30 metres by 20 metres. A spokesman from the service is advising people to stay away from the scene and are asking those in the immediate area to keep doors and windows closed. The spokesman added that there was no injuries involved. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used four jets, two hose reels, and water curtains, which spread the direction of water, to fight the fire las night. Extra crews were sent throughout the night to relieve the pumps. Firefighters are on the scene this morning (Monday) monitoring the fire which is being allowed to burn under control. According to the spokesman a fire investigation is to be carried out shortly.
