A 36-year-old man who was found in possession of drugs at a music festival in Abbots Ripton last year has been handed a fine by magistrates.

Samuel Orphe, of Harlequin Road, in Isleworth, near London, was stopped and searched at the Secret Garden Party festival on July 23 after he was seen acting suspiciously.

Orphe was found to be in possession of 0.136g of cocaine and 0.354g of cannabis before police were called and he was arrested.

Mr Orphe, who appeared at Cambridge Magistrates’ Court yesterday (Tuesday), pleaded guilty to one count of possessing a Class A drug in relation to the cocaine and one count of possessing a Class B drug in relation to the cannabis.

In mitigation, Ben Brown told the Cambridge Magistrates’ Court bench: “Mr Orphe made full admissions in interview at the earliest opportunity. He shows remorse and there are no issues with addiction here.

“They are very small amounts [of drugs] and it would be my submission to treat them as such. He does not currently have a job, but is looking for one in sales.”

After deliberation, the chairman of the bench said: “For these two offences we are going to give you a fine. It would have been higher, but we have considered your early guilty plea.”

The 36-year-old was ordered to pay £186 by way of a fine, along with a victim surcharge of £30 and court costs of £85.
