A campaign has been launched to stop a fresh wave of housing development in Buckden after a series of planning applications were lodged.

Residents in Buckden have come together to launch an appeal to stop developments that could see hundreds of new houses built around the village.

The Keep Buckden A Village group is asking residents to object to proposed plans to build 230 houses north of Mill Road, which would form part of applications that could see up to 810 houses built in the village in the future.

An application made by planning agents Gladman for 180 houses in Lucks Lane has already been approved by Huntingdonshire District Council, and another application has been proposed for 400 houses to be built in Silver Street by planning consultants Deloitte Real Estate.

Campaigners have also speculated that planning agents might try and build on land south of Mill Road, although no application has been made yet to do so.

The reasons behind the objection include fears over an increase in traffic through the village due to pressure being put on the A1 roundabout and the level crossing, as well as longer waits at the doctors, dentists and schools.

Allan Bretta started the campaign after worrying that residents in the village weren’t aware of the development proposals.

He said: “I started the campaign as a way to inform everyone about what is going on. A lot of people that I have spoken to aren’t even aware of the most recent proposal.

“The problem is we aren’t against development in the village and we do understand that it needs to happen. But the volume of housing that is being proposed here is just too much.”

Residents are also concerned about wildlife that currently lives around the area, which is said to include badgers, hares, skylarks and owls.
