THE parents of a teenager paralysed from the waist down in a sporting accident are organising a walk this weekend to raise money for a new sports wheelchair.

Longsands College student, Dean Symmons, was injured during a PE lesson in June last year whilst swinging to hit a softball.

The 15-year-old dislodged a disc in his spine, scraping his spinal chord which left him unable to move his legs.

Dean’s family set up a trust fund to help pay for wheel chairs and adaptations to the house, where Dean is forced to sleep in the living room downstairs and use a commode.

His father, Andy, told The Hunts Post: “So far we’ve raised about 4,000 which has enabled us to get a customised wheelchair for Dean.

“But he really wants to start playing basketball so we’d like to be able to fund a sports chair for him.”

Dean will join family and friends on the 15-mile walk along the guided bus route between St Ives and Cambridge.

INFORMATION: The walk starts at 10am on Sunday, January 15 at the St Ives Park and Ride, Meadow Lane, St Ives and finishes at Milton Park and Ride, Cambridge, where there will be a meeting in the Golden Hind pub, Milton Road.

Entry onto the walk is 10 and can be donated on the day or through Dean’s website www.deanstrust.com For more information on the walk visit www.facebook.com/events/133046756800171
