A MUM-OF-TWO from St Neots got more than she bargained for after posting an event on her Facebook page.

Abi Grimmer, 31, of Cromwell Court, Eynesbury, was so frustrated by the lack activities on offer to entertain three-year-old daughter Maddison over the summer holidays, she decided to come up with her own.

She advertised a picnic on Facebook and invited her friends, who in turn invited their friends who invited their friends, and by the time the picnic took place on Tuesday (August 9), about 250 people had turned out for Abi’s Big Riverside Picnic in St Neots’ Riverside Park.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I think it would get this big,” Abi told The Hunts Post.

“It started out as something for my friends and by the first week in August we were up to 70 acceptances and 70 maybes.

“Yesterday we had 117 people coming and 94 maybes, and today there must be about 250 people here.”

When Abi’s local Tesco store in Eynesbury got word of the event, they pledged to donate free food to help the picnic go with a bang.

“I want to say a massive thank you to Tesco,” Abi said, “they said they’d donate food but when the delivery driver turned up this morning laden down with doughnuts, cakes and party food I couldn’t believe it – we still haven’t got through it all.”

For added entertainment Abi also enlisted the help of St Neots fire brigade who took fire engine along for the children see.

Abi said she hopes to hold a similar event next year after receiving so much positive feedback about the day.

“People were coming up to me saying thank you for such a lovely day and would I do it again?

“The weather was so good and everyone had such a great time that I think I will.”
