A three-day extravaganza is being planned by the Mayor of Huntingdon and his team.

Councillor Bill Hensley wants his 10 town-based charities to benefit from the events, which include a concert, family fun day and a five-mile race all taking place over Easter bank holiday weekend.

Former mayor Doug McIlwain, chairman of Cllr Hensley’s fundraising committee, said: “We thought ‘let’s put a pop concert on’ then ‘let’s do a five-mile race’ and ‘what about a family fun day?’ and now we are doing all three … it is certainly keeping us all busy.”

Doug and his team are hopeful that the weekend, which this year is supported by Huntingdon Town FC, RecordWorld and BRJ Run and Tri, will become an annual event. “I want people to stay in Huntingdon on that weekend, instead of heading further afield,” he said. “I wanted to do something that the whole community could support as a family-orientated Easter-time weekend.”

Kicking off the weekend, on Saturday, April 19, will be the concert by The Tribute Show, a multi-tribute band featuring a range of artists including Robbie Williams, Kylie Minogue, Olly Murs, Adele, Simply Red and Elton John.

On Sunday, the Jubilee Park festivities continue with the family fun day. This will include a variety of fun fair rides, Easter egg hunt, charity stalls and food stalls as well as a charity football match.

Doug said he also had confirmation that a star of a popular Essex-based reality TV show will be making a guest appearance ... although he has been sworn to secrecy on the star’s identity!

The culmination of the weekend is the five-mile race across Lord de Ramsey’s estate, starting at Jubilee Park. As well as the multi-terrain, chip-timed event for seniors, there will be a 1.5 mile fun run for youngsters, as well as various stalls.

INFORMATION: Tickets for the concert cost £12 from Huntingdon Town Hall on 01480 411883, RecordWorld on 07584 407584 or www.facebook.com/huntingdonfundraising.

The children’s race on April 21, is at 10am and costs £5. The five-mile race is at 11am and is £12 or £10 for affiliated members.
