A university student spotted attempting to turn around her car on an A14 slip road has been convicted of drink-driving.

Caitlin Darroch, 21, of Northampton, was nearly three times the drink-drive limit at 91 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath when she was stopped on the slip road by Huntingdon Racecourse, in Brampton, at about 3.30am on September 21.

Miss Zivuku, in mitigation, told the court that Darroch had been “left feeling very vulnerable” after a break-in at her home. On the night of the incident, she went to a concert with friends and became separated from them.

Uncomfortable with being alone at her Northampton home, she attempted to drive to her parents’ house in Ipswich when she was stopped by police.

Darroch pleaded guilty and magistrates disqualified her for 23 months. She also received a community order for which she will have to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work over the next 12 months.

The Northampton University student was also ordered to pay £85 costs, plus a victim surcharge of £60.
