SQUEEZED between Easter and the Royal Wedding some might be forgiven for forgetting that April also includes the day of England’s patron saint.

In Huntingdon young and old will be gathering to mark April 23 with a series of celebrations in the town centre.

The day will start off with a procession down the High Street to Market Square led by the Air Cadet Force Corp of Drums.

There will be a fancy dress competition with children invited to come in a medieval-themed dress, before St George’s triumphant slaying of the dragon is re-enacted by actors from Walton Historical Services.

In the afternoon there will be more fun and antics with a puppet show at All Saint’s church yard, story tellers at St Benedicts Court, and dragon building and performance at Chequers Court.

Anyone with a sharp eye can take part in the Find the Dragon competition. Symbols of dragons spelling out the letters of St George will be on display in shop windows.

Rounding off the day will be a dinner organised by the Royal Society of St George at The Old Bridge Hotel.

But you do not have to wait until the big day to get involved.

For those who have like to get creative, there will be a junior arts competition calling on children in Key Stage 1 and 2 at school, to come up with their depictions of St George and the dragon.

Pictures will be displayed in the town hall foyer throughout St George’s Day.

While at Huntingdon Library, there will be a costume making workshop at the library between 10am and 12pm on Thursday, April 21, where youngsters can dress up as knights, damsels and dragons.

For children who cannot attend the workshop, a quick guide to creating your own tunic from a pillowcase is attached.
