A COUPLE who enjoyed their first date rowing on the river in Huntingdon have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.
alph and Joan Burton, of The Green, Great Staughton, were married at St John the Baptist Church, Keyston, on March 29, 1952.
They celebrated with family and friends on Saturday at the village hall in Great Staughton.
Eileen Colman, also of Great Staughton, the youngest of their four daughters, said her parents’ long marriage was an inspiration to her.
She said: “They say the key to a long marriage is give and take. They don’t pretend they’ve never had disagreements as that would be lying.”
Mrs Burton, 83, a former cook for schools across Huntingdonshire, and Mr Burton, 83, a former builder, have spent their retirement caravanning but due to Mr Burton’s ill-health have had to give up.
The Burtons were sent a card from the Queen while all of their daughters – Ann Jakins, from Sawtry, and Dorothy Smith and Christine Myles, both of St Neots, along with Mrs Colman – joined them on Thursday to celebrate.
