The application was submitted by retirement housebuilder Churchill Retirement Living for the former site of builders merchants Travis Perkins, in Ermine Street and Edison Bell Way. Planning director Andrew Burgess said: There is a real need for private retirement housing in the Huntingdon area and our proposed development will go some way to increasing this type of housing for local residents. The scheme will be made up of 51 one and two bedroom apartments, exclusively for those aged 60 and above, with landscaped gardens, parking spaces for 17 cars, a communal owners lounge, a guest suite and a lodge mangers office. In preparing the application more than 500 residents and businesses were given a chance to comment on the design and location. During the online consultation concerns were raised about the size and height of the building and level of proposed parking. In a statement to stakeholders the company stated: This concern also reflects comments received from the council as part of the pre-application process, and where possible the scheme will be amended to reflect those comments. If planning consent is given by the council the redevelopment is scheduled for completion in 2016. As well as meeting the need for high-quality retirement apartments, the development will bring benefits to the local economy in Huntingdon. Owners will be within walking distance of many amenities such as shops and restaurants, helping to boost the local economy, added Mr Burgess. The complex will be the second retirement development to be given the go ahead in Edison Bell Way including a 66 bed care home constructed by LNT Carehome Developments. It also follows those that were announced last year by retirement developer McCarthy & Stone for 26 one and two bedroom apartments on the former Territorial Inn pub, in Cromwell Walk that have now been named as Elm Tree Court.
