It may have taken many months to build, but it took engineers less than 24 hours to demolish the old bridge over the A1 linking Brampton to Grafham.

Now that the dust has settled, Highways England has released time lapse film of the concrete structure being taken down.

The bridge was originally built around 40 years ago as a safer way of crossing the busy dual carriageway, replacing a hazardous crossroads, but it was not wide enough to cater for the expanded road underneath being created as part of the £1.5 billion A14 upgrade.

A new bridge, close to where the A1 and A14 merge and crossing 10 lanes, was opened a few days before the demolition took place, enabling traffic to flow between the two communities.

The A1 was closed so that the demolition could take place, with eight excavators being used to chisel away the concrete deck, piers and abutments.

Work went so smoothly that the road was reopened an hour earlier than expected.

Engineers are now working building the widened A1 and the new A14
