More than 500 people have signed a petition requesting the crossing on Hartford Road to allow easy access between the High Street and Saxongate. The petition had been signed by Huntingdon councillors, residents and users of the Saxongate Centre which is run by the Papworth Trust as well as other people who need to cross the road in that area. But it looks as if the petition will be defeated by a lack of funds at Cambridgeshire County Council. Officers from CCC visited the site in November and carried out a traffic speed survey on January 6 of this year, which produced an average speed of 14.8mph. The petition and the officers findings are due to be considered by the Huntingdonshire traffic management area joint committee on Monday (January 23). However, the report states that only sites where three or more people have been injured in accidents in the past three years are likely to get funding for a pedestrian crossing. There have been no recorded accidents at the proposed site, the report adds. The report concludes that funding would have to be found from elsewhere.
