Work to upgrade Huntingdon’s historic Cromwell Museum was completed this week, with doors expected to open to the public again today (Tuesday).
The museum, formerly a grammar school attended by Oliver Cromwell himself, closed on November 1 to allow for an upgrade to the electrical system, as well as the air conditioning.
Corrine Galloway, museum curator, said the work was being done to allow the items on display at the museum, which includes one of the Lord Protector’s death masks, to be preserved in the best possible condition.
Ms Galloway said: “To improve the conservation of the collection, we had a new air conditioning unit put in. The work was done in partnership with Cambridgeshire County Council.”
The day-to-day running of the High Street museum was transferred to a charitable trust in September year, with ownership also passing from Cambridgeshire County Council to Huntingdon Town Council.
Trustees of the museum include Allen Packwood, Sir John Major, current Huntingdon MP Jonathan Djanogly, Erika Clegg, Camilla Nichol and Peter Johnson, who is chairman.
