The revolt against Cambridgeshire County Council’s proposed funding cuts for the Cromwell Museum in Huntingdon is nearing its 3,000-signature target.
Museum supporters are due to be outside the High Street attraction this weekend asking people to sign a petition calling on the county council to rethink its plans to axe its financial support.
If 3,000 people sign up by February 5, it will force a county council debate.
As of today (Friday), about 2,600 had signed in support of the Friends of the Cromwell Museum’s campaign.
Huntingdon MP Jonathan Djanogly has backed the campaign and is due to join those collecting signatures tomorrow (Saturday) morning.
The county council has commissioned a consultant, paid for with a grant from the Arts Council, to consider whether other options for running the museum would be viable.
However, the consultant is not due to report back until April and the county’s business plan, which suggests scrapping funding of £20,000 for the museum in 2015/16, is due to be agreed on February 18.
