Huntingdonshire District Council has said it will launch an internal review into an incident involving one of its refuse lorries.

Police were forced to close the slip road at J15 on the A1, near Sawtry, on Monday, January 16, after the refuse lorry was involved in a collision.

Three people were travelling in the lorry at the time, with one of the passengers, a man, airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, in Cambridge, with “life-changing” injuries.

A spokesman for the district council said: “The council has been in contact with all relevant authorities regarding the incident. As it has been classed as a road traffic incident, the police are leading the investigation and the Health and Safety Executive is not involved.

“The council is providing ongoing support for its staff, and we would ask that everyone respect the privacy of the families involved. The matter is currently a live investigation and we are unable to comment further.”

The spokesman added that the council would launch an internal review once police have reached a conclusion.

Officers are still appealing for witness to contact them via 101, quoting incident 172 of January 16.
