A group of travellers remain encamped on a car park in Godmanchester, despite Huntingdonshire District Council launching legal action to remove them.

The group, comprising caravans, vehicles and a mini-digger, arrived at the Bridge Place car park on Thursday, having left a site on a recreation ground, also in Godmanchester, where they had been staying.

Their encampment has been set up at the far end of the car park, away from the area usually used by drivers, where local housing organisation Luminus leaves its vehicles.

The council started legal proceedings to move the travellers on after their arrival but the process is still continuing.

Paul McGowan, from Godmanchester, has asked the council if parking charges had been suspended while the group was in place because they did not have tickets.

The council responded by saying it was trying to evict the travellers legally and as quickly as possible.

The authority told him that penalty tickets had not been issued to the vehicles because it did not want to take any action which could impede the eviction process.
