A Government proposal to build homes on RAF Molesworth has been labelled “hot air” by the leader of Huntingdonshire District Council.

Councillor Jason Ablewhite made the claim after it was announced that the site would be handed over to the Homes and Communities Agency to set the ball rolling for development.

Cllr Ablewhite told The Hunts Post: “It is all hot air from the government; we think that nothing should happen at the moment as the biggest problem with Molesworth is that it is in the middle of nowhere and has no sustainable infrastructure planned.”

It was announced earlier this year that the Ministry of Defence had deemed the base surplus to requirements after the US forces decision to pull out by 2023 and earmarked it for ‘disposal’.

A new housing development was thought the most likely outcome.

Cllr Ablewhite said: “There is no way that we would want houses on Molesworth until a government department can come back to us with plans to address the issues of sustainability and infrastructure.”

Following the talks with Huntingdonshire MPs Shailesh Vara and Jonathan Djanogly defence minister Mark Lancaster will continue to work with the district council on development of infrastructure.

Mr Vara said: “This is a huge site and there are a number of issues of serious concern for any plans for developing it. It is vital that the local community and district council are closely involved in any future proposals for the site.”

Cllr Jason Ablewhite, and Councillor Jim White, who represents Ellington ward, also attended the talks.

Despite ongoing proposals for houses to be built on the site the district council has been looking at other options for its future use including a solar park.

“Molesworth is a brownfield site which would be perfect to build homes on but as it is not near any major town it does not seem viable so we have also looked at putting a solar park on there,” said Cllr Ablewhite.

As for RAF Alconbury Cllr Ablewhite has said he supports the possibility of a housing development on the air force base due to the infrastructure already available.
