Eleven members took a guided tour of the Huntingdon Green Waste Recycling Plant to see how the contents of our green bins are processed into bags of soil enhancer. It was explained that the major problem with green waste was contamination - people putting plastic bags, glass and other unsuitable items in their green bins. It is very costly and labour intensive to remove all contaminating items by hand and we were told that if contamination could be reduced (or better still eliminated) residents would see the benefit in their Council Tax. Cambridgeshire residents had also benefited because the council introduced wheelie bins early, taking advantage of EU funding. Members of the public can go to the site to buy compost and top soil.
