It was the fifth theft in seven weeks, where property in sheds has been taken from Somersham and District Allotment Societys Kings Road site. One of the items taken was a chicken. Chickens have been stolen before, as have eggs, during what appears to be a random pattern to items being targeted. On another occasion, thieves took two broken strimmers and two tins of paint. At one shed, which had been fitted out by its owner, a number of pictures of birds and farmyard scenes, which have sentimental value to their owner but little material worth, were taken. During another break in, a broken kettle was taken and at another shed a number of tools were taken outside and left lined up along the side. New plot holders are given advice on security and told not to leave valuable items on the site overnight. Members who give up their spare time to not only work on their own plots, but help improve the site for everyone, are unnerved as well as a little baffled by the burglaries, but remain unbowed. The society has called a committee meeting for later in the week and also has a meeting planned with police to decide the best way to proceed.
