A week of celebrations kicked off in Somersham on Saturday as the carnival court was crowned.

Princess Hollie Checkley, 10, and her attendants Sophie Kimpton, 10, and Hattie Bird, 10, were crowned at the Victory Hall on Sunday as part of a week of celebrations and events leading up to Somersham Carnival.

The three girls entered a draw open to Year 5 and 6 girls who live in Somersham or Pidley. They have already completed their first official duty which was to award prizes to the winners of the country crafts competition.

Their next duty is to lead the carnival procession on the princess float, leaving The Trundle at 12.15pm on Saturday, and parading down Feoffees Road, High Street and Parkhall Road to the main carnival event on Norwood playing fields.

The procession will also include an array of classic cars, bikes, tractors and, a first in recent years, decorated wheelbarrows celebrating 40 years history of Somersham Carnival.
