A centenarian from Ramsey received a card from both the Queen and a former prime minister in recognition of her big day.

Mona Taylor enjoyed a week’s worth of parties and celebrations at Jones Court sheltered housing complex, in Great Whyte, in honour of her milestone day (September 27), with friends, family, and fellow residents all joining the festivities.

Mona, one of five children, was born in Bury and worked on the land with her father, while her mother ran the Thee Horseshoes pub, in Wistow.

She married Roy in 1941 and the couple had a daughter, Helen.

Mona moved into Jones Court in 1997 but has retained her independence, even continuing to ride a bike around Ramsey into her late 80s.

She was an active member of the town’s Women’s Institute, and remains a regular at the St Thomas a Becket Church, and the Ramsey Day Centre.

She even joins in with visits to the 10 pin bowling at Lakeside Lodge, in Pidley, with other residents of Jones Court.

Mona came to know former Prime Minister Sir John Major through her sister, who used to organise tea parties for the Conservatives in the town, which Sir John would regularly attend.

As well as a card from the Queen, Mona also received a card from John and Norma Major, with whom she remains good friends.

Jones Court was opened in 1986 and Mona is the first resident to reach 100.

She said: “The secret to long life is to stay busy, eat good food, and enjoy a glass of Baileys!”
