For this month’s Hunts Post Nostalgia feature, we take a look back at the Victorian era and a game of croquet.
The photo is part of the Whitney collection but mystery surrounds both the identity and location of the house and the people pictured.
Archivist Sue Sampson said: “The only clues as to the identity and location of the house are the words ‘R Daintree’s house’ scratched on the original glass plate. We believe the image dates from around the 1850s or 1860s.
“Might it be the home of Richard Daintree, who is listed as a farmer of Hemingford Abbots in Hatfield’s 1854 History, Gazetteer and Directory of the County of Huntingdon? Or did the property belong to Robert Daintree who was living in Somersham at the time of the 1861 census?”
