Standing next to his hoard of trophies, the cycling champion stares impassively out of the black and white photograph.

The only clues to help St Neots museum staff identify the mystery man are within the picture – but they hope to discover more about him.

It was when curator Liz Davies was searching the museum’s photographic archive for images for a First World War exhibition that she came across the picture.

She hoped that it would provide a link to the Huntingdonshire Cyclist Battalions, which many local men joined at the outbreak of war in August 1914.

However, the only information she has about the photograph is that it was given to the Longsands Museum Collection in the 1970s.

She said: “Presumably, he is local and he has won all these amazing trophies and things. There is a canteen of cutlery, two clocks and a really big trophy at the back.

“Obviously, he was a really amazing cyclist who had won so much – we have got a picture but we don’t know who he is.

“If someone can help we would be really thrilled because then if we can find his name and the area where he was from – which is presumably local – then we might be able to find out all about him.”
