OFFICERS have launched a crack down on drink and drug driving over Christmas.

Traffic police will start patrolling tomorrow (December 1) carrying out spot checks across Huntingdonshire, with drivers given breath tests and field impairment tests to check if motorists are under the influence of drugs.

The campaign will last until New Year’s Day.

Casualty reduction officer PC Steve Gedny said: “Our message is clear – if you drive under the influence of drink and drugs, expect to be caught, it is wreckless and irresponsible.

“We tackle drink driving throughout the year, but over the next few weeks drivers should expect a highly visible police presence on the county’s roads as we target those who drive under the influence.”

Cambridgeshire County Council Cabinet Member for Community Infrastructure, Councillor Tony Orgee added: “Drink driving is an all year round problem, but the temptations can be greater during the festive period. If people intend to use their car they should either avoid alcohol or identify a nominated driver who will ensure they get home safe and sound. There is no excuse for drink driving.”

Last year saw the number of people caught driving under the influence increase slightly, with 1,181 people arrested compared to 1,133 arrests the previous year.
