FIRE chiefs have delayed a decision which would allow for an investigation to begin into a possible merger between Cambridgeshire and Suffolk fire services.
Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Fire Authority members met on Friday (March 30) to discuss whether the fire service should start preparing a business case for the merger to protect frontline jobs against continuing cuts in funding by the Government.
The fire authority decided to delay the decision for a month to “take it away and think about it”.
A spokesman said: “Members discussed whether future investigations were going to begin and have postponed the decision until May to look into the plans in more detail.”
The two services merged call centres into one control room in Huntingdon in October last year, saving a total of �800,000. Savings for a full merger of the forces are currently unknown, but the service has described the sum as “a lot of money”.
